Discuss the effects of the Civil War and Reconstruction and the industrial revolution, including demographic shifts and emergence in the late 19th centruy of the U.S. as a world power.
It's oft said that it wasn't until after the Civil war that people started saying "the United States is" instead of "the United States are." Which is somewhat ironic, as the Nation was more divided than ever. But in the end America was united, which was certainly a part of our becoming a World Power.
War also tends to be conductive to the progression of technology, and indeed the Civil War lead to the first battle of iron-clad sea vessels. America's success in the Industrial Revolution was a key step in vaulting us to the top of the world.
The South definitely struggled after the Civil War, as the Reconstruction and industrial revolution began and they started losing more and more land and money of their rural lives to industries. As more and more jobs appeared, schooling became a key factor, so enrollment boomed and students were taught a more advanced industrial education. This led to more inventive thinkers who came up with more machines, which in turn boosted the industrial revolution, which I believe was a major factor in the United States outlook as a world power.
The United States became one big nation after the Civil War. The south suffered because their economy was mostly based on cotton and depended on slave labor (which was outlawed), but the north prospered as it became completely involved in industrialization. Industrialization brought about changes in the cities as they became over populated. The living conditions were poor because there wasn't enough housing or sanitation to support so many people. Before the Civil War, Americans were not very interested in foreign matters, they were mostly concerned with selling the west, industrialization, and domestic matters. After the war, they began acquiring small islands, and eventually purchased Alaska from Russia and were able to acquire the Hawaiian Islands. America became much more involved with trading overseas. This helped the U.S. to start to become a world power.
