Explain social Darwinism and its effects on society. Analyze the similariteis and differences between the idiologies of Social Darwinism and social Gospel. (Can you name thses men?)
The father of Social Darwinism was Herbert Spencer and was founded on the belief that the strongest or fittest people would survive and flourish in society and the weak should be allowed to die. He believed that it was natural, normal, and proper that the strong would survive at the expense of the week. He took Charles Darwin's theory of survival of the fittest in nature and used it to boost his social theory. He believed that it was morally incorrect to help someone weaker than oneself since that would be promoting the survival and possible reproduction of someone who was fundamentally unfit. Social Gospel was the opposite of Social Darwinism. It said that "industrial capitalism" was unjust and led to the poor leading sinful lifestyles because of their economic situation.Community improvements became their focus as the worked to make improvements in education, health care and sanitation. Social Gospel stood out as it focused on the problems of industrialism and unregulated urban growth. The picture on the left is Charles Darwin but I'm not sure of who the other picture is.
Social Darwinism basically took Charles Darwin's theories and applied them to society. "Survival of the fittest," sums it up nicely. He believed that those with strong bodies and wills would survive in contrast to those of weak mind and body. Social Gospel was, in contrast, very different. Its view was to improve industries and rural area as a whole so all would thrive together. I think the pictures are of Charles Darwin.
