I would argue that Automobiles and and Skyscrapers had a very large effect on turn of the century cities. The former lead to streets as we now know them, and the latter allowed cities to fit vast amounts of building into much smaller areas. Without them places like New York and Chicago would be unrecognizable.
I would agree with Joshua that Skyscrapers were quite important in the technological advances on the turn of the century urban planning. I would say even more so than others, in fact. Architecture played a huge role in the building of not only American cities, but in their culture as well. The Skyscraper was the first architectural creation that was 100% American, and is now replicated in cities around the world.
Although I agree that skyscrapers are important, I believe that automobiles are more important because it led to roads which produced more job oppurtunites and made it easier for people to visit their families. It also allowed people to travel to cities far away faster, and created many more oppurtunites.
